In the 1970s and 1980s, a generation of Italian photographers radically reimagined how landscapes could be represented. Moving away from the picturesque image of Italy inherited from art history and popularized by tourist imagery, they turned their cameras toward suburbs, industrial areas, anonymous architecture, deserted streets, signs, and often-overlooked places. Viaggio in Italia (1984), a landmark project conceived by Luigi Ghirri, offers a key reference point for understanding how photography helped develop a new visual language for depicting contemporary Italy.

ABOUT THE SERIES | This series traces the evolution of modern and contemporary Italian photography, from depictions of postwar social realities to the complexities of today’s visual culture. Through the works of leading Italian photographers, we will explore how photography has documented society and political change, reimagined the Italian landscape, and captured the transformations of contemporary life, from globalization and new technologies to tourism.
