Experiential:

  • To perceive, To listen, To communicate. Experiencing perceptual and communicational flexibility (Borgato, 2015)
  • What do you see? What do you feel? What would you like to do? Guided exercises through pictures, storiesand role play (Hofstede, Pedersen, Hofstede, 2002)
  • Narratives of intercultural experiences
  • Working with Italian comic and satirical videos depicting and questioning stereotypes

A bit of theory:

  • Culture, cultural maps, prejudice, stereotypes, to observe and to interpret (Mantovani, Mazzara, 1998; Hofstede, Perdesen, Hofsetede, 2002)

Objectives:

  • Raise awareness about how cultural maps drive our reality perception, prejudice, stereotypes;
  • Differentiate between observation and interpretation.
  • Improve intercultural awareness.

The seminar aims at providing theoretical and practical tools to facilitate the integration in a new socio-cultural context, namely the Italian culture. The seminar is offered to prospective students and expats in Italy.

Course held in English.

Marta Longu holds a Master’s Degree in Social Psychology from the University of Cagliari and a Masters in Refugee Care from the University of Essex and Tavistock Clinic, United Kingdom.
