On the occasion of the “Holiday of the Holidays 2016”, for the series “The Italian concerts of the Chamber Music Society”, a concert by the ensemble “Phoenix”, conducted by Myrna Herzog. Guest of honour from Italy, Fabrizio Longo, baroque violin. Event organized in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute in Haifa.
The Holiday of the Holidays is celebrated every year on the week ends of December, from Thursday to Saturday. The colorful events marke the tollerance and unity of the three religions. Within this context, the series of concerts organized in the churches of Wadi Nisnas, in the Center of the Carmel and at the University of Haifa by Prof. Amos Lanir represents one of the most beautiful and interesting initiatives.
The superb Sicilian baroque six-voice oratorio is based on the Book of Daniel, and its dramatic plot brings to life the story of the three Jewish youths condemned by King Nebuchadnezzar to be thrown into a fiery furnace for refusing to worship the king’s statue.
The concert concludes with a sing-along of Verdi’s beloved Va Pensiero (the chorus of the Hebrew slaves) from his opera Nabucco, a piece which has been proposed as the Italian National anthemn, has been recently used in a plea for the support of culture in Italy and was sung in the Israeli Independence celebration in 2010.
According to Gershon Cohen, director of the Abu Gosh Festival, the performance of Nabucco by Ensemble PHOENIX stunned the audience, who referred to it as “one of the best and most interesting concerts in the history of the festival”. “Deeply moved, the audience showed its enthusiasm in lengthy applause, shouts and whistles”.
