ARLECCHINO’S SECRET | Commedia dell’Arte

In the framework of the cultural program “Italy, Cultures, the Mediterranean” promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, on the occasion of the “International Commedia dell’Arte Day” and the holidays of Carnival and Purim, a show by Cristina Coltelli, with Cristina Coltelli and Marcella Colaianni: Arlecchin’s Secret: a journey into the grotesque worlds of Commedia dell’Arte, from the Ancient Carnival to the present day.

Who were the comedians “dell’ Arte”? And how they managed to codify an universal language which is such perfect? The show tells the fascinating story of the Italian comedians, pioneers and travelling pirates, and at the same time it reveals some of their tricks. Involved in a constant interaction between spectators and stage, people will finally meet Arlecchino and his ancestor’s heritage.

At the end of the lecture the audience will come back home with the following information:

  • What was Commedia dell’Arte
  • How and why Commedia dell’Arte survived and its impact on modern theatre
  • Why our husband, neighbour, best friend, boss, wife, always keep his/her head bended on one side….​

“Italy, Cultures, the Mediterranean” is a cultural program, which the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation will implement in the Middle East and North Africa during the year 2018, with the purpose of consolidating the dialogue between the two sides of the Mediterranean Sea. A dialogue based on the exchange and enhancement of different cultural and social identities and the combination of tradition, innovation and creativity.
