Missing the train. Answering the phone. Leaving a routine checkup at the doctor’s. How can one moment change the rest of your life? Is there an exact point in time when “before” becomes “after”? And what do you hold on to when the earth moves under your feet? “The Man with the Flower in the Mouth ” was written as a short story before it was adapted to the stage to become one of Luigi Pirandello ’s most popular plays. In this One-Act play the Nobel-winning Italian playwright designs an architecture for transformation. The play, adapted to Hebrew and directed by Orly Noa Rabinyan, was initiated and produced by the Italian Cultural Institutes in Tel Aviv and in Haifa, as part of Pirandello 150 – an international festival marking the 150th anniversary of the playwright’s birth.

ON THE PLAYWRIGHT: Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936) was a Nobel-prize winning Sicilian playwright, novelist and poet. He wrote over 40 plays, most notable are “Six Characters in Search of an Author”, “Tonight We Improvise” and “Enrico IV”. Pirandello regarded himself as a writer-philosopher and often dealt with the vicissitudes of fate, change of perception, madness and the blurry line between fact and fiction. He first published “The Man with the Flower in his Mouth ” as a short story in 1918 with the title “Cafe Nocturno”. A few years later the story was re-published under the title “Death Upon Him.” Only in 1923 did Pirandello turn it into this short play that became one of his most popular One-Acts in Italy and abroad. Pirandello died in Rome in 1936. His home became a museum dedicated to his life and work. 2017 marks the 150th anniversary of his birth.
