In the Mediterranean geographical area there is a traditional cultural heritage crystallized over thousands of years: the buildings, the urban fabric, the villages and cities that were founded in the Middle Ages and have survived to the present day. The common Mediterranean spirit is evident in construction techniques, in the materials used, in architecture and in urban planning. Spontaneous, unplanned (vernacular) architectures prevail in the villages. The monumental buildings are concentrated in the city (fortifications, religious buildings, public buildings and residential buildings of different nature). Throughout the Mediterranean region we find ourselves today faced with the need to preserve what remains of the cultural heritage and to adapt the ancient urban fabric and buildings that define it to needs of modern life.
This conference aims to illustrate the architectural and urban features of a multi-layered Mediterranean culture, visible in Akko, Nicosia and Famagusta.

At the end of the lecture, we will visit the historical center of Alkko to look for evidence of successive historical, urban and architectural stratifications in different buildings and city monuments.
