RETROSPECTIVE FELLINI: Free screening of the movie directed by Federico Fellini, with Alvaro Vitali, Fiona Florance, Britta Barnes, Pia De Doses, Renato Giovannoli, Anna Magnani.
Fellini’s “Roma” is a homage to the city the director dreamed of as a boy, discovered as a youth, and experienced fully in a lifetime of filmmaking. It is at once a history and a fiction, a tribute and a rebuke, a love story and a tragedy. For Rome to Fellini is not one city, but the city, “The Eternal City,” for better and for worse.
If you are looking for a film with a plot or a traditional three-act structure, this certainly isn’t it. And if you are looking for an autobiography, this isn’t the film either. Instead, it is more like an impressionistic painting of a collage of snapshots. If it drags in places, so does the city. If it is majestic or seedy or funny or sad, that’s the city, too. Because above all, this film captures “Roma” from a unique perspective, interpreted by the eye and heart of Italy’s acclaimed “maestro” of moviedom and the city’s #1 fan.
In Italian, with English subtitles.
