LIVING WITHIN THE LAYERS OF HISTORY | Lecture

For the series HISTORICAL MULTI-LAYERED CITIES | THE HIDDEN AND THE VISIBLE IN ANCIENT AKKO, a lecture by Yair Varon. Event organized in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute in Haifa.

prima conferenza

One of the most beautiful and poetic historiographic theories is that of the “Palinsesto”. The term describes a continuous process of writing and rewriting, which over time links the past to the present and the future. Metaphorically, it reflects the actual and subsequent arrangement of landscapes, buildings and objects on geologically different layers.
How to incorporate the archaeological remains in new constructions, private and commercial, in Israel and in Italy, is the theme of this conference. How do archaeological finds influence and condition the planning, conservation and representation of the new environment? From the analysis of the combination of archaeological remains in situ, one wonders about the life of historic spaces and buildings, their use and their representation over the centuries. At the same time, one wonders what relationship will establish, in everyday life, the users of the new buildings with the architectural elements of the past.
