The August 10 concert, hosted by Umbria Jazz as part of the Jazz in August summer event, is dedicated exclusively to Italian jazz.

Gianluca Petrella’s Cosmic Renaissance are back in orbit, freely inspired by the work of one of the great outsider’s, Sun Ra, a musician who is little talked about today but is a unique figure in the history of jazz. Petrella and his Cosmic Renaissance will be performing in the very same square in which Sun Ra and his Arkestra played at the first edition of Umbria Jazz in 1973. Petrella’s project was born in 2007 and since then, performing all over Europe and recording three albums, it has continued to develop and take on new forms and sounds. What guides it is not so much the music itself but the approach to music that was taken by Sun Ra, the guru-like figure who called his band the Arkestra and claimed to have come down to Earth from outer space. Petrella does not attempt to faithfully recreate Sun Ra’s music, but rather explores his incredible visionary ability to imagine new sonic and aesthetic worlds, and this ability is something that Petrella shares with Sun Ra.

Singer Gino Paoli and pianist Danilo Rea return to Umbria Jazz with the successful mix of jazz and song that they have recorded on three albums and performed at many concerts, including in Umbria. Together, they explore many forms of song ranging from the Neapolitan tradition to the French school and to the work of Genoese singer-songwriter Paoli, songs which are beloved by generations of Italians. Appearing with them as special guest is trumpet star Fabrizio Bosso.

Funk off: the Tuscan street band has become extremely popular with their original and recognisable formula: to overcome the concept of a marching band in the New Orleans tradition by proposing exhilarating and spectacular music, modern and riveting. This is how Funk Off have become, ever since Umbria Jazz presented them for the first time, in 2003, the darlings of the public. Think of music with echoes of James Brown and Frank Zappa, up to pure funk like that of George Clinton. The Tuscan group has been repeated practically every year, in Perugia, Orvieto and Terni, becoming a permanent attraction of the festival. The same success has also been achieved abroad, from Melbourne to New York to China. The reason for such popularity is very simple: the group is great fun and sounds good, and their sense of spectacle, as well as their musical innovations, manages to revitalise a century-old genre like the marching band that is part of the dawn of jazz.
