On the occasion of the 23rd edition of the Week of the Italian Language in the World, entitled Italian and Sustainability, a Land Art project devoted to environmental protection, with artist Marco Mazzei, in collaboration with Beit Hagefen | Arab-Jewish Culture Center and Hand in Hand | Haifa.

Marco Mazzei travels around the world, placing his hand-embossed aluminium fish sculptures in different locations and sharing his project with local communities. In the story behind the project, the fish, tired of living in a sea mistreated and polluted by a divided humanity, decide to return to dry land in order to reaffirm the values of beauty and the natural connection linking all living beings to one another and to the universe as a whole.

The works installed in the communities that host the artist become symbolically part of a larger shoal, joining other fish that have already been installed or are still in the planning stage. The geolocated installation sites trace both a physical and a virtual journey.

Mazzei chose the fish for its sinuous, fluid shape, which lends itself particularly well to his chosen technique, but also because of its rich symbolism in both sacred and secular traditions, combined with a growing sense of love and respect for nature.

The aluminium used for Mazzei’s fish has a purity level of 99.5% and complies with current regulations governing aluminium alloys suitable for food use. The installations therefore have no adverse impact on the environments in which they are placed.

On 25 October, the artist will lead a creative workshop at the Clore Library of Beit Hagefen | Arab-Jewish Culture Center, with the support of the Italian Cultural Institute in Haifa and in collaboration with the Hand in Hand school in Haifa.
