Francesco I de’ Medici, Granduke of Tuscany from 1574 to 1587, is Cosimo I’s successor. He is known for his passion for natural science, alchemy and as a patron of the arts. In the present conversation, we dwell on the figure of Francesco I and on the works commissioned by him. We shall talk about the Orti Oricellari, the Fonderia next to the San Marco Stables, the Studiolo in Palazzo Vecchio. Further, we shall present the garden of Pratolino, known as the marvel of Europe, with its grottoes, automata, waterworks and gamberaie (ponds for raising shrimps and crabs).

Ada V. Segre, garden historian and conservator, studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, at the University of Bologna (Italy) and at the University of York (UK).

Casciano near Florence and the Garzoni Garden in Collodi. She taught at the University of Bologna, at the New York University in Florence, and is currently teaching at the Technion and at the Wizo College in Haifa.
