This lecture explores how Italian photographers used their cameras to capture the profound social and political transformations of postwar Italy. From rural communities to rapidly changing cities, from religious rituals to scenes of everyday life, photography became a means of observing and interpreting reality, moving beyond straightforward documentation. The works presented invite us to consider photography’s role as historical testimony, social criticism, and personal expression.
- Alternatively, you can watch the lecture live on the Institute’s YouTube channel.
ABOUT THE SERIES | This series traces the evolution of modern and contemporary Italian photography, from depictions of postwar social realities to the complexities of today’s visual culture. Through the works of leading Italian photographers, we will explore how photography has documented society and political change, reimagined the Italian landscape, and captured the transformations of contemporary life, from globalization and new technologies to tourism.
