Odalisque, by Francesco Ballesio (1860-1923)
The rules of Made in Italy, between business, curiosity and cultural appropriation. Today’s fashion sector is still built on rules that were largely defined in post-war Italy, when, due to a fortunate combination of events, the country found itself responding in the most appropriate way to the needs of the global economic boom. How does this system change in the wake of social media and the new needs dictated by environmental sustainability?

The series | A journey across one thousand years of fashion influences between Europe, Asia and the Middle East: this is the framework within which the fashion historian Sisley Schio will portrait some of the central changes in the fashion phenomenon, in Italy and in Europe. The assimilation of ideas and styles from East and Far East has always played a powerful role morphing Italian and European fashion, since the early Middle ages, through Renaissance and the birth of Industrialism, until the contemporary trends where cinema, digital production and the culture of social media are shaping a new aesthetic panorama. The reciprocal fascination between West and East is pivotal in the genesis of fashion’s social and economic phenomenon. Curiosity, exoticism and geopolitical balances feed a never-ending sequence of exchanges and references in the production of Italian fashion.
Sisley Schio began her professional career as costume and textile researcher, teacher, costume designer for the theater, in Pisa, Marseille and Paris. She has been Director’s assistant at the Musée de la Mode et du Textile, Musée du Louvre in Paris in the years 2000-2001. She wrote sections related to italian fashion for Treccani Encyclopedia. She writes today about trends in fashion, design and contemporary creativity. As a journalist during the last 15 years, she could develop a deep understanding of the internal dynamics of the current fashion system and trends development.
Event in English, FREE OF CHARGE, online.
