Young Italian scholars travelling between East and West: Three years of cooperation between the Negev Group (Engineering Without Borders – Technion, Haifa) and the Bedouins in Sothern Israel, told by Silvia Gambino (University of Milan, University of Haifa) and Matteo Laterza (Technion – Haifa, University of Pisa).
Engineers Without Borders Israel Association is working to improve the quality of life of the population in Israel and the populations of developing countries around the world through environmentally and economically sustainable engineering projects. The organization strives to improve the quality of life in the communities through implementation of sustainable technologies and providing training and education programs to the community, while empowering local leadership. EWB Israel is part of Engineers Without Borders International association, and collaborating with other organizations in Israel and abroad.
A team of volunteers from the Negev group of Engineers without Borders – Technion visited several Bedouin villages during 2014 with the support of the AJEEC – Negev Institute. Speaking with the residents of the villages, they understood that the most pressing problem was lack of energy in the face of extreme temperatures. This is most pronounced in winter, when temperatures are very low. The chill in these buildings prevents mothers from sending preschoolers to kindergarten on cold days. As a result, the volunteers choose to address heating in kindergarten classrooms.
Matteo and Silvia, two Italian volunteer, are waiting for you to tell the adventure of the Negev Group, from its first steps to the implementation of the project to its future perspectives. The meeting will take place on Tuesday, May 31, at the Italian Cultural Institute in Haifa.
Silvia Gambino graduated in Languages and Culture for Communication and International Cooperation from the University of Milan. Between 2013 and 2015, she lived in Israel and attended a Master in Peace and Conflict Management Studies at the University of Haifa. Silvia volunteered in the Negev Group since its first activities and served for two years as its PR person.
Matteo Laterza holds a Master degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Pisa and is about to complete his Aerospace Engineering Ph.D. studies at the Technion in Haifa. Looking for volunteering opportunities in Israel, Matteo decided to contact the local chapter of Engineers Without Borders and joined the fledgling Negev Group at the Technion. Until the beginning of 2016, he was the technical coordinator of the Negev team.
