As a Man Grows Older, by Italo Svevo, portrays Emilio Brentani, a clerk from Trieste torn between vague aspirations and self-deception: his restless love for Angiolina and his friendship with the vigorous Balli lay bare his incapacity to choose, while his sister Amalia withers in silence. Set in fin-de-siècle Trieste, Svevo tells—with wry, unsparing irony—the gulf between desire and reality, laying bare romantic myths and everyday mediocrity: a novel about inadequacy and the fear of risk that stifles any chance of change.

The series | The Fall edition of the 2025 Book Club invites us to reflect on the many ways freedom and desire take shape in each of our lives—the freedom to choose, to love, to change, and to imagine a different future. Through three powerful, deeply human novels, the series explores the tensions between personal aspiration and social constraint, the fragility of feelings, and the pull of passion that shapes our choices. A literary journey through identity, dreams, and self-awareness—for those who see reading as a way to know oneself, find a mirror in others, and discover the humanity we share.

Free online event, in Hebrew.
