Tasmania, by Paolo Giordano | Paolo, a forty-year-old writer, sees his relationship with his partner, Lorenza, erode between 2015 and 2020, while he endures a long spell of writer’s block. In Paris, in the aftermath of the terror attacks, an encounter with a climatologist widens his perspective: the climate crisis, the MeToo movement, and the pandemic thread through his daily life. “Tasmania” becomes a longed-for elsewhere—half salvation, half escape. The result is a novel about shouldering responsibility and the pressing imperative to inhabit the present.
