Shoa' Remembrance Month 2014 – third appointmentPRECIOUS FABRICS FROM THE FIVE ROMAN ANCIENT SYNAGOGUESOpening of the exhibit @ 18:30, on January 26th, 2014. In occasion of the 2014 Shoa' Remembrance Month, the Italian Cultral
Institute in Haifa has the pleasure of inviting you to the opening of
the photo exhibit Precious fabrics from the five ancient Roman
synagogues, realized in collaboration with the Jewish Museum of Rome and
Haifa Cinemateque.A free screening of Il giorno piu' lungo, by R. Gabbai will follow at 19:00 in the Haifa Cinemateque hall. The exhibitThe
long and fascinating history of the Jewish Roman community, whose
presence dates back to the Second Century B.C.E., is narrated through
objects and documents in the Jewish Museum of Rome, housed in the
premises of the Great Synagogue. Among the most interesting
pieces in the Museum collection are about two hundred mappòt, the long
cloths, which protect the Torah scroll. The mappòt were
sumptuously embroidered with family coats of arms, Hebrew inscriptions
and figures such as the Tables of the Covenant, the seven fruits of the
Land of Israel, the spiral columns of Solomon's Temple, and other
symbols from the Bible and Jewish tradition. The 15 magnificent
fabric samples exhibited here connect us to the period of the Ghetto and
demonstrate how, despite hardship, the Roman Jews shared with the rest
of the city a distinct flavour for beauty and grandeur.Sunday, January 26th, 2014, at 18:30Lobby of Cinemateque Haifarehov HaNassi 142 – Haifa
