Young Italian scholars travelling between East and West
Young Italian scholars travelling between East and West FROM ANCIENT TO MODERN PILGRIMAGE. MEANING OF A COLLECTIVE PHENOMENON.A conference by dr. Claudia Damari, University of Pisa. Event in collaboration with the Società Dante Alighieri in Haifa. Pilgrimages are among the most ancient world phenomena, common to the most diverse cultures. This experience of mobility, capable of embracing both tradition and modernity, is – first of all – the expression of a peculiar relation with "the sacred", but it is also a ritual, which still today motivates millions of people to start a journey towards places believed to be holy. In order to understand the complexity of this phenomenon and the deep meaning that this experience takes on in our modern society, one needs to analyze its three fundamental components: travel, holy place and main characters. This conversation deals mainly with the theme of Catholic pilgrimages in the Holy Land. Claudia Damari completed her Ph.D in History and Sociology of Modernity at the University of Pisa and is currently a post-doc fellow at Haifa University, working on Catholic pilgrimages to the Holy Land. Dr. Damari collaborates with the Political Sciences Department of Pisa University and taught at Lucca University Campus. In 2013 she was appointed Visiting Professor at the William Paterson University of New Jersey, USA. Dr. Damari's main research interests deal with the relation between sociological and phenomenological theories on one side, and social mutations on the other. Special attention was given to the analysis of different collective identities within the individualization process of modern societies. Among her publications are: La percezione della realtà in Alfred Schütz ed Erving Goffman (Plus-Pisa University Press, 2008); L'umorismo. Event in Italian.
