The Jewish children of Villa Emma in Nonantola, 1942-1943

The International Memorial Day for the Holocaust

Photo exhibit

Prof. Klaus Voigt, the exhibit’s curator, will attend the opening event. This exhibit focuses on the daily life of a group of Jewish children, which arrived in Nonantola (near Modena) during the years 1942-1943. They were brought from different countries to escape the nazi persecution and were hosted in a large villa rented by the welfare organization of the Italian Jewish community (Delasem). During their stay, the children attended school courses and were introduced to agriculture and craftsmanship prior to immigration to Palestine. All the children of Villa Emma survived the war and most of them eventually arrived at Eretz Israel. The citizens of Nonantola played a major role in the rescue of these children, particularly Dr. Giuseppe Moreali and Father Arrigo Beccari, which are two of “The Righteous among the Nations”.
