For the series HISTORICAL MULTI-LAYERED CITIES | THE HIDDEN AND THE VISIBLE IN ANCIENT AKKO, a lecture by Vincenzo Albertini, president of the Napoli Sotterranea Association. Event organized in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute in Haifa.
It’s been thirty years now since the association “Napoli Sotterranea” took on a journey to make the underground of the city one of the highlights of Naples.
NAPOLI SOTTERRANEA has become an ever-growing reality: an attraction for tourists, a place for cultural events and a “lab” for scientific explorations in varied fields such as archaeology, geology and biology.
Some of the recent highlights in Napoli Sotteranea were the installation of the seismograph device called Arianna in 2009, and the creation of Hypogea Gardens (underground greenhouses).
The research continues forward, making science accessible to the masses through the underground of Naples which consists of caves and tunnels that have been part of Naples evolution and growth ever since the city was established by the Greeks in the IV century BC. We love to say that the underground is “Time above Time”- eras overlapping.
Starting in 2019 a new and exciting experience of virtual reality (Immersive VR) is in place which allows users to dive into the Roman Theater throughout the eras, beginning at its construction in the Roman days through the transformations it underwent in different eras and up until the XVII century when it was finally buried by a layer of modern buildings.
