"In the shade of gardens, in Italy and abroad"ITALY IN ST. PETERSBURG: ITALIAN MASTERS, ARCHITECTS AND STYLES IN THE IMPERIAL SUMMER "CAPITAL OF FOUNTAINS"A lecture by Anna Lobovikov-Katz, Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. Event organized in collaboration with the NB Haifa School of Design – WIZO School of DesignThe ensemble of parks, palaces and fountains of Peterhof (Petrodvoretz) near St. Petersburg (Leningrad), Russia, is one of the world renowned architectural ensembles and restoration projects. The ensemble was founded in early 18th century. It includes 18 sq. km of parks (the Lower Park, the Upper Garden, the Alexandria Park, the English Park, and other adjusting parks and cultural landscapes), several large palaces, and many park pavilions, 144 fountains and three large cascades. The Peterhof ensemble is located on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland, 25 km from St. Petersburg. The lecture presents an overview of the historical development of this ensemble, with a focus on the influence of the Italian gardens; it outlines and provides examples of the contribution of Italianarchitects and artists to this development (e.g. Nicolò Michetti, Bartolomeo Rastrelli, Giacomo Quarenghi). It addresses the selected aspects of arts, architecture and decoration of the Peterhof Ensemble of Parks, Palaces and fountains, and explores some parallels in planning and design of this complex as the continuation of the historical "vista" of the garden development via Villa d'Este, Vaux-le-Vicômte, Versailles and… Peterhof.Anna Lobovikov-Katz (Arch., PhD.) combines arts and conservation of cultural heritage in her teaching, research and professional activities. Thanks to her family restoration tradition, she has been directly linked to art and its preservationthrough a unique architectural ensemble and restoration project: Petrodvoretz (Peterhof), the Czars's summer residence in Russia, where she lived until making aliyah to Israel. Her research themes include interdisciplinary aspects of culturalheritage conservation (incl. stone deterioration and conservation), urban conservation and heritage education, and examine visual vs technological aspects of heritage preservation. She was initiator and head of EU project ELAICH (Euromed Heritage 4 Programme), and is active in other national and international research projects. She has organized and chaired international symposia on conservation of built heritage, served as an evaluator for international research programs, and she is a member of international conservation forums and scientific committees and international scientific symposia in the field of conservation of cultural heritage. Her education and current activities combine arts and technology: from studies at the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, to MSc. and Ph.D. from the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology (conservation of built heritage); from research in deterioration of stone to teaching methodologies in conservation, descriptive geometry and arts, which she applied in her university courses in Israel, Italy, Malta, etc. She has shown her paintings in solo and juried exhibitions in France, Israel, Italy, USA, and is the recipient of the USA and Israeli awards in fine arts.Please, follow this link to download the complete program of the series.Event held in Hebrew.Tuesday, December 20th, at 19:30The NB Haifa School of Design – WIZO School of Design, room 10421 HaGanim Street, Haifa
