Motherhood is a universal and a personal experience at the same time. During its first hundred years, psychoanalysis went through a lot of changes in relation to motherhood. According to Freud and Lacan, the mother was perceived as a dangerous figure, while contemporary psychoanalytic theories have underlined the great potential of the mother figure in the development of the individual and of society. Moreover feminist criticism has given a new and important contribution to the perception of motherhood. Among other things, it has exploded several myths on motherhood. For example it emerged that motherhood is a social phenomenon and not necessarily a natural one.
