The period between the 10th and the 13th century is called the Golden Age of al-Andalus. During those three centuries an extraordinary multiethnic culture flourished and manifested itself in all forms of 'adab: literature, poetry, philosophy, historiography and sciences. Muslims, Jews and Christians contributed together to the majlîs, symposia of intellectuals and poets, who shared the same cultural atmosphere of suhba, the «amorous friendship» described by many Arab Medieval sources. By comparing some Arabic, Hebrew and Spanish sources, like Ibn Sa'aid al-Andalusi, Kitâb 'adâb al Falâsifa and the history of the Middle Commentary of Averroès on Aristotle's Poetics, it is possible to identify some key elements of that extraordinary cultural atmosphere and to contextualize it within the multifaceted intellectual history of al-Andalus.Francesca Gorgoni earned her BA and MA in History and Archeology of the Ancient Near East and Islam from the University of Rome "La Sapienza". She is currently a PhD student at the University of Paris, Inalco, and at the University of Aix-Marseille and is working on her PhD research about the Hebrew translation of Averroe'sMiddle Commentary on Aristotle's Poetics. Francesca Gorgoni's major field of study is the interaction between Muslim Arabic culture and Judaism in the Middle Ages and in particular the Jewish poetry and philosophy written in Arabic during the Islamic classical period.
