The Italian Cultural Institute in Haifa is pleased to present the recently restaured print of Galileo by Liliana Cavani, whose latest movies was screened at Haifa Cinematheque on October 20th. Galileo which was also screened at Venice Film Festival early in September, gives us a powerful portrait of the Italian scientist Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) which spans the life of one of the greatest astronomers of modern times from the very moment when he started doubting the Ptolemaic system (he was 28 years old) to when, as an old man, he was forced to renounce his vision and make a public abjuration. The movie focusses both on dialogue and on conflict (between culture and authority; between the believer and the Church or rather its representatives ; between the hierarchy and the Church of the Second Vatican Council. In spite of some rigid features, the movie goes beyond the conventional patterns of biographical cinema and transforms the reconstruction of the past into action in the present time. Galileo is at the same time the tragedy of a man ahead of his time and the story of a naive experience. Official censorship at the time sensed the anticlerical potential of Cavani's work so much so that the movie was never broadcast on Italian television. (Source: Il Morandini Dizionario dei Film)
