Zubin Mehta conducts the Symphony Orchestra and Chorus of RAI. Presents Maurizio Dessalvi, director of the IIC in Haifa.Tosca remains one of the most popular operas in the western world. Giacomo Puccini wrote the opera over the course of four years. Tosca came about after Puccini witnessed two performances of Victorien Sardou's 1887 play La Tosca, which painted a depiction of Rome, threatened once again by the invasion of Napoleon. The original play garnered widespread popularity in France, and its emotional portrayal of the characters inspired Puccini a great deal.In his adaptation, Puccini specifically indicated the times and locations of each act in the opera. In 1992, an ambitious crew of filmmakers chose to recreate the opera, live, in the exact locations and the exact times that Puccini described, resulting in a television event unlike any other.
