The Memphis group, founded in 1981 by the Italian architect Ettore Sottsas, is one of the best known in postmodern design. The group is characterized by bright colors, geometric shapes and unconventional materials and its works challenge the minimalist aesthetics that dominated in the 70s. The group aspired to break free from traditional norms in design, while adopting a playful and eclectic style that combined influences from various art movements, including pop art and art deco. This lecture will review the history of the group, its main works and the artistic influences from which it draws.

The series | Contemporary art, especially Italian art, embraces today other media, which complete, integrate and sometimes even question it. New tools, which open up rarely or never-before-traveled paths, bringing a new audience closer to the world of art. We see these phenomena happening in museums, galleries and even beyond them, in design shops, in fashion venues and in architecture.
This series aims to examine, each time in a different way, how Italian art interacts and intertwines with other worlds.
