A refined and poignant tribute to Ghitta Carell (1899–1972), one of the most sought-after portrait photographers in twentieth-century Italy. Her elegant and incisive portraits offer a unique window into the cultural and social life of her era.

The exhibition, hosted in the atmospheric rooms of Villa Necchi Campiglio, features over one hundred original works—including photographs, letters, books, postcards, and for the first time, Carell’s own photographic equipment.

Curated by Roberto Dulio, the display offers an intimate, immersive experience: images are integrated within the villa’s historical furnishings, allowing visitors to enter a space where art and life harmoniously intertwine.

Particularly notable are portraits of architect Piero Portaluppi, sisters Nedda and Gigina Necchi, and a young Giulia Maria Crespi—founder of FAI.

Carell’s life and legacy, marked by success, silence, and rediscovery, come full circle in this homage co-sponsored by the Italian Cultural Institute of Haifa, where part of her archive is kept.

The exhibition is accompanied by two major publications:
Un ritratto mondano. Fotografie di Ghitta Carell (Johan & Levi, 2013)
Ghitta Carell’s Portraits (Five Continents, 2024| English and Hebrew Edition) – available upon request at the Italian Cultural Institutes in Haifa and Tel Alviv upon completing this BOOKING FORM.
