On January 29, 1951, the Italian Song Festival was born, the famous Sanremo which brought pop music throughout Italy and abroad. In the following decade, the songwriters/cantautori appeared on the scene: singers who performed songs written by themselves, as in France and the United States. Both the quality of the lyrics and the originality of the musical solutions improved, slowly distancing the songwriters from mainstream music represented above all by Sanremo. The 70s are the years of the “committed” songwriters, but also of those who escaped political framings: Francesco Guccini, Lucio Dalla, Ivano Fossati, Rino Gaetano, Paolo Conte, Franco Battiato, Lucio Battisti and many others. Progressive rock flourishes in Italy, a musical phenomenon explored by bands such as Area, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, Le Orme, New Trolls, Premiata Forneria Marconi, and still appreciated by experts and enthusiasts all over the world. At the same time, the recovery, revaluation and rewriting of traditional popular music was catching momentum in the southern regions.

Do streaming platforms help local talent find their audience or do they homogenize the entire music scene? How is the tradition of Italian popular music reworked? And where does rap fit into today’s musical landscape? Let’s try to frame the path of Italian pop music in a short cycle of free lectures in Italian by Lev Kats, translator, interpreter and enthusiast of good Italian music.
