Born in Nuoro, in the heart of Sardinia, in 1871, Grazia Deledda began writing at a very young age and published her first short stories in newspapers while still in her teens. Although she later moved to Rome, her native island remained at the heart of her literary world: Sardinian landscapes, traditions and community life form the backdrop to stories in which individual passions, social constraints and moral dilemmas are closely intertwined.

The meeting will focus in particular on The Mother (La madre), the only novel by Deledda to have been translated into Hebrew, with references to other works by the author as well. Through the relationship between a mother and her priest son, the novel explores the conflict between desire and duty, faith and emotion, offering a powerful portrayal of the protagonists’ inner struggles.

Published in Hebrew in 2014 exclusively in digital format, The Mother is available for purchase on Indibook and can also be borrowed through the Libby digital library.

  • FREE admission. In-person event in HEBREW.

The series | Marking the centenary of Grazia Deledda’s Nobel Prize in Literature, awarded in 1926, the autumn series is dedicated to three major figures in Italian literature: Grazia Deledda, the second woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature and still the only Italian woman writer to have been awarded it, whose work gave voice to Sardinia and its world in the early decades of the twentieth century; Alba de Céspedes, an innovative writer and a forerunner of the feminist perspectives that would become increasingly prominent in the second half of the century; and Donatella Di Pietrantonio, one of the leading voices in contemporary Italian literature. Their works offer a journey through a century of change in Italian society, tracing the evolution of family and social relationships, individual identities, and the relationship between the individual and the surrounding world.

Free event in Hebrew, with consecutive interpretation into Italian.
